[News] TVB actors sweep acting awards at ATA 2011

The annual glitzy affair which recognizes top talents and productions amongst the television industry in Asia which was held at Shangri-La Hotel last night, was graced by an assortment of international artistes from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and more.

The highlight and most highly-anticipated awards of the night were -- without a doubt -- the acting awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Comedy Performance by an Actor/Actress.

Despite Singapore's strong showing at the nomination rounds which saw Ch 5 and Ch 8 artistes bagging five out of seven spots in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category, the coveted award of the night went to Hong Kong TVB actor, Kevin Cheng, for his stellar turn as a street lawyer in the drama series, Ghetto Justice.

Apart from his Asian Television Awards (ATA) 2011 win, the 42-year-old also recently picked up awards for his role in Ghetto Justice at the Astro Awards 2011 in Malaysia and the annual TVB Anniversary Awards 2011 held last week.

Beating local actors such as Tay Ping Hui and Christopher Lee in the acting category, Kevin was running high on emotions at the post-awards interview with xinmsn as he effusively thanked "fans in Singapore, Hong Kong and China" for all their support through the years.

"I'm really happy. The award I received on the 5th [during the TVB Awards] was based amongst my colleagues, whereas this is a regional award from Asia. I feel very proud and honoured," said Kevin, who was clad in a simple and crisp black tux for the event.

With three Best Actor awards in the bag from three different award shows, when asked of his next goal, Kevin humbly replied, "I feel that as long as I put my heart into acting -- that is the most important. I hope to film and be a part of even better productions in future, and present them to the audience -- that's all I'm thinking about right now.

"I've had a good year with all these awards. It's a good ending [to the year]," he grinned.

Aside from TVB actors' strong showing at the ATA 2011 last night, local Ch 5 programme, The Noose, also proved to be a strong contender in the Comedy categories and reigns on as Best Comedy Programme of the year, second year in a row.

That's not all. With The Noose nabbing three out of six nominations in the Best Comedy Performance by an Actor/Actress, the award eventually went to well-loved comedian Suhaimi Yusof, who is known for his role as Jojo Joget in the show.

Though absent from the show due to filming commitments in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he was well-represented by his two co-hosts fromThe Noose, Chua En Lai and Alaric Tay, as they gave an acceptance speech on his behalf.

Living up to their reps as comedy actors, true entertainment came in the form of the hilarious onstage bantering between Alaric and En Lai as the latter jokingly expressed, "Since it was actually taken from me last year, and I didn't get to talk last year [due to work commitments]... Yes thank you very much everyone, for working so hard. I'd like to thank you guys for giving me the award last year.

"Well this year, obviously Suhaimi has taken over; I shall pass the crown to him at another ceremony which will take place in the dressing room in MediaCorp," chuckled En Lai, the previous winner in the same category.

Going by how En Lai and Suhami bagged awards with their no-show at the award ceremony, during a backstage interview with xinmsn, when Alaric hopefully quipped, "Maybe next year I shouldn't come. Then, I would receive it, right?"

En Lai agreed and replied: "You can't be here -- to get it -- in order to win."

Aye, take it from the previous winner.

MediaCorp won awards in four categories including Best Lifestyle Programme, Best Comedy Programme, Best Comedy Performance by an Actor/Actress and Terrestrial Broadcaster of the Year.

MediaCorp CEO Shaun Seow received the Terrestrial Broadcaster of the Year from Guest of Honour, Indranee Rajah, Chairman of Government Parliamentary Committee for Information, Communications and the Arts.

Hong Kong actress Charmaine Sheh went home with the Best Actress in a Leading Role for the drama series Can't Buy Me Love while TVB stars Fala Chen and Mak Cheung Ching went home with the Best Actress and Actor award in a Supporting Role for No Regrets.
